Volunteers Help Fill the Fridge – Summer 2023

Throughout the school year, the Irving Schools Foundation distributes more than 1,500 bags of food weekly to Irving ISD students, and we wanted to help fill the gap for students while school is out. Fill the Fridge is the summertime extension of Food for Thought, our low-barrier, weekend food bag program aimed at addressing food insecurity for students and their families. With the help of volunteers from Wells Fargo and the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives (NALHE), we were able to distribute more than 10,000 pounds of food to families across two Saturdays in June.

  • 260 families served

  • 500 boxes of food

  • 18 volunteers

When surveyed about the value of the Fill the Fridge initiative, parents overwhelmingly reported that it was a huge help to them and they were very grateful. One parent stated, “It has helped me a lot because the children eat at home more often during summer and right now, food is very expensive.”
